About the name
'Tilth' is a term used to describe the condition of soil; it is best to acheive a 'fine tilth' before sowing seeds or planting out seedlings.
This clothing brand is imagining a broader awareness of the relationship between fashion and farming. It's about the source of materials, exploring the potential to make a bigger share of our clothes from textile sources that do not merely extract from earths resources, but give back. Initially I am focusing on two textile crops Flax (Linen) and Hemp which have the power to improve soil quality through the nutrients they return to it during their growing cycle, they are easily grown in Europe and could potentially be integrated into crop rotations or act as cover crops in existing agricultures. I am exploring these exciting possibilities and will share my findings with email subscribers.
Behind the label
Fine Tilth is created by Tilly in Hackney, East London. A designer and maker with a life long passion for better practices in the fashion space, a love of natural materials and a desire to discover the possibilities of local textile production in this country. This brand is more than just a shop, it is a vessel to explore ideas around decentralising textiles and fashion, soil health, ancient natural materials, biodegradability and natural dyes. Hopefully you'll buy a few shirts along the way too...
